The Challenge
Better Reading wanted to build a reading app for an Australian audience that didn't feel like a copy of Goodreads or Fable. The bar wasn't 'features' — it was capturing the way real reading communities actually talk about books, recommend them, and keep each other reading.
The Approach
- 01Worked with the team as a forward-deployed engineer + product partner, not a vendor
- 02Designed the social and discovery layer first; book metadata and tracking second
- 03Built the mobile app on React Native with a backend that's community-first by default
- 04Iterating on real user behavior with the in-house team as the app rolls out
